I've seen reviews on clipless curling irons all over the blog world and in magazines and it's just insane how much everyone loves them. Using a clipless iron helps you to create loose waves like the PYT in Hollywood. I've heard about these irons forever and wanted to try one for the longest time, but I just wasn't willing to spend $$$ on it.
After reading this guest post at Sweet Nothings, I was set. I have straight, fine, flat hair. This was going to be amazing. I was going to buy it and have gorgeous locks come Monday. I went to Target and spotted the Remington T-Studio Ceramic Pearl Professional Curling Wand
and promptly dumped it in my cart and raced to the checkout line.

I then practiced all weekend. On myself, on my girlfriends, I watched countless You Tube videos.
This was an EPIC FAIL for me.
There is no luscious loose waves people. I'm getting nothing but corkscrew curls. Like straight out of camp when you would do rag-tie curls (check it out here if you don't know what I mean).
So I tried it again, but with larger section of hair since mine is pretty fine and here's my results:
I feel like Britney Spears circa 2000 when she would have her hair curled, crimped, and wavy all at the same time.
Ok, so I know I'm doing it right. I'm wrapping my hair around the wand using the glove, being sure not to twirl my hair as I wrap, holding it a few second and letting it go. Ok, correction: I talked with my hair stylist and showe her the pics and she thinks that it could be because it's tapered and that I had my hair wrapped around it too long.
I'm wondering if it's because this wand is tapered....I'm pretty bummed. I'm dissappointed in the wand and myself. I had to drown my sorrows in Moscato and chocolate.
What is the problem? Do any of you lovely ladies have any suggestions?
I feel like I can get pretty glam waves with my regular curling iron by starting 2 inches from the root and leaving the last 1-2 inches out. I really want PYT Hollywood waves though. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.
OH, btw the wand has several temperatures, going up to 410 degrees, has automatic shut-off, and comes with a MJ glove to wear while using. Plus it's a pretty pearly pink color. I think this would be good for people who have a hard time curling their hair, it's pretty easy wrapping your hair around the wand or for people whose hair doesn't hold a curl well. I'm not knocking the product, I just don't get the results I want. Boo hoo hoo.

i've been wanting to try this curling iron too for a while now... that sucks that you couldn't get the results you wanted... it seems like it would be harder to use than a regular curling iron... plus the whole glove thing just scares me!
I bought mine 5 years ago, tried it several times, and ended up THROWING it in the garbage. I was like really!?!? WTF this does the exact same thing as a curling iron. And I, like you, was doing the method of curling CORRECT. I can be a snob for a second and say that I am a partial hair guru. Stick with a barrel with a handle. This clip less iron is for the birds.
I love the waves you are talking about as well, and i think i have found out how to do it. my hair is not fine, curly but i blow dry is straight - well into a frizzed straight mess. I then take my uber expensive Conair (like 15 bucks at a drugstore) 1.5 in barrel curling iron. I section my whole head into about 5-6 sections, 3 per side really. Then pick a side to start, grab the first section - pull it out away from my head, and clamp curling iron close to scalp, and twist. dont' pull it down and wrap it back up, clamp and twist a bit - hold for a few seconds then move the culring iron down a bit and twist back up. There is a bunch still sticking out, but every few sections you release and slid it down you hair a bit. eventually it will all be done. Don't mess them let the huge ringlets cool, spray then after a while run your fingers through.....Man i hope i explained this correctly - this was the process my hair stylist used when doing my wedding hair and these are the curls you are after!
I saw something in InStyle about clip-less curling irons... I'm not exactly sure, but I think they said that you SHOULD twist the hair before wrapping around the barrel or else you will get ringlets instead of waves.....

I have one too and I can't use it for te life of me/ I burned my hand hardcore bc I couldn't use it with the glove. Noun just go to dry bar saves me je work and crappy job I do
That sucks! I totally wanted to get one of those. Welcome to my world, I epic fail when I try to redo anything. Do you know how many times I've tried to curl my hair like you showed us in that blog post like a year ago? A LOT! I suck at recreating, most things that turn out ok were a mistake. I swear!

I waws JUST looking at those yesterday online, but I only found super expensive ones. I can only really do 1 "hairstyle" and that is blow drying it, so I thought I would give this thing a shot. I am not so sure anymore though!
Hey! I started reading your blog after my friend (and your fellow blogger NessaLovesMakeup) suggested it.
I have one of the expensive clipless irons because it's the only thing that will keep a curl my naturally straight hair - however, I can never get the loose waves that you're talking about. I DO twist my hair as I'm wrapping it around the barrel and use bigger sections of my hair to get softer curls rather than ringlets and I use my fingers to separate the curls once they've cooled.
You might want to stop at one of the kiosks at the mall and have them demonstrate the loose waves on you (they're usually more than willing to do that at the Brea mall). Of course you'll have to deal with their sales pitch afterward but it might be worth it :)

I don't have an expensive iron, but I do it with my normal clipped Conair curling iron ($15). I just leave the clamp down though and take a 1-2 in section of hair and twist it like a dreadlock and then I wrap it around the barrel (over the clamp) for 10 seconds until all my hair is done, then i take a styling cream (John Freida brilliant brunette shine cream) and run/tousle my hair with my fingers. That was how I was finally able to do the loose beachy waves on myself (the flat iron method resulted in charred fingertips lol). Twisting the section before that doesn't let perfect ringlets form. The Conair iron isn't crazy hot so it doesn't set the curl perfectly and they loosen up through the day while still staying wavy.
And I LOVE moscato, especially the Moscato D'Asti from the San Antonio winery :-)
hahha the description of that pic of your hair is killing me... I used to love Britney's split personality hair.

Darnit. I have always wanted to try these kinds of curling irons, but never have done it yet. My best friend uses one and her hair looks AMAZING...but she has shorter, thinner hair than i do. UGH. I have a feeling my results would be simliar. im sorry i have no tips to offer :-)
Sorry it didn't work out for you although drowning your sorrows in Moscato and chocolate isn't all bad. Thank you or the review though I was interested in this. I'm all but certain not that i would mess this up terribly!!

Funny timing. My girlfriend bought this over the weekend and was just telling me how much she loved it.
Side benefit: It is easier to travel with than the other style since you can throw it in your carry-on without getting hassled at the airport.

i have an enzo milano clampless and never use it. I prefer my hot tools regular ol' curling iron!

Don't feel bad I purchased one two a few months ago and used it for half my head and hated it. I wish they could just make one that was a solid barrel like a curling iron, straight up and down and LARGE. Then I might be happier with the results. Currently I fight with my iron to make waves w/ out clamping down.

Thanks for the review. This is the exact iron that I want, but now I'm a little hesitant to try it. I've always wanted to try out the gorg wavy look and never have. I thought this might solve my problems. We'll see if I get it now...
